Moving a Piano in Calgary: What You Need to Know

· 3 min read

A piano is one of the most challenging items to move. An upright piano weighs 300-500 pounds, while a grand piano can exceed 1,000 pounds. Beyond the weight, pianos are precision instruments with thousands of internal components that can be damaged by improper handling.

Why Professional Piano Moving Matters

We've seen what happens when people try to move a piano with friends and a pickup truck. Scratched floors, damaged walls, broken legs, cracked soundboards — and sometimes injuries. Professional piano movers use:

  • Piano boards and skids: Specially designed platforms that support the piano's weight evenly during transport
  • Heavy-duty straps and padding: To secure the piano and protect the finish from scratches
  • Piano dollies: Four-wheeled dollies rated for the piano's weight, different from standard furniture dollies
  • Ramps and stair equipment: For navigating stairs, thresholds, and uneven surfaces safely

Types of Pianos and Moving Difficulty

Upright Piano (300-500 lbs)

The most common type in Calgary homes. Uprights are moved standing up on a piano dolly. They fit through standard doorways but require two experienced movers minimum. Stairs add significant complexity and usually require a third person.

Baby Grand (400-600 lbs)

Baby grands are moved on their side after removing the legs and pedal assembly. The lid is secured and the entire piano is wrapped in padding before being placed on a piano board. This requires a crew experienced in grand piano disassembly.

Grand Piano (600-1,200+ lbs)

Full grand and concert grand pianos are the most challenging moves. Same process as baby grands but with significantly more weight and size. These moves often require 3-4 specialized movers and sometimes custom rigging for difficult access situations.

Preparing Your Piano for the Move

  1. Close and lock the keyboard lid to protect the keys during transport
  2. Do not try to move the piano yourself before the movers arrive — even shifting it can damage the floor or the instrument
  3. Clear the path from the piano to the door, including removing rugs, furniture, and any obstacles
  4. Measure doorways and hallways along the route. Standard uprights fit through most doors, but tight corners can be challenging
  5. Inform your movers about stairs — the number of flights and whether there are landings or turns

After the Move

  • Let the piano acclimate to its new environment for 2-4 weeks before tuning. Changes in temperature and humidity affect the soundboard and strings
  • Place the piano wisely: Avoid direct sunlight, heating vents, exterior walls, and drafty areas. These cause wood expansion/contraction and tuning instability
  • Calgary's dry climate matters: Calgary's low humidity (often below 30% in winter) can affect pianos. Consider a piano humidifier system, especially for acoustic grands
