Winter Moving in Calgary: Tips for Cold-Weather Moves

· 2 min read

Calgary's winters are long and can be brutal — but moving doesn't stop just because it's -25°C. Whether you're relocating in November or February, winter moves are completely doable with the right preparation. In fact, winter is often the best time to find available movers and competitive pricing.

Advantages of Moving in Winter

  • Better availability: Most people avoid winter moves, which means you can book your preferred date and time more easily
  • Potentially lower costs: Reduced demand means more flexible scheduling and sometimes better rates
  • Faster turnaround: Movers aren't booked back-to-back like they are in summer, so crews are fresh and focused

Preparing for a Winter Move

Clear the Path

This is the single most important thing you can do. Before the movers arrive:

  • Shovel and salt the driveway, walkway, and front steps at both your old and new homes
  • Clear the path from the door to where the truck will park
  • Apply ice melt or sand to prevent slipping — movers carrying heavy items on ice is a recipe for injury and damage

Protect Your Floors

Snow and slush will be tracked inside. Professional movers use floor runners, but you can also:

  • Lay down old towels or cardboard near the entrance
  • Have a doormat at both the old and new home
  • Keep a mop or towels handy for quick cleanup

Protect Your Belongings

  • Electronics: Let TVs, computers, and other electronics acclimate to indoor temperature for 2-3 hours before plugging in. Condensation can form inside cold electronics and cause short circuits
  • Plants: Wrap plants in plastic bags and move them in your heated car — not the truck. Brief cold exposure can kill tropical plants
  • Liquids: Water-based products can freeze. Move cleaning supplies, paint, and other liquids in your car

Calgary Winter Moving Hacks

  • Watch for chinooks: Calgary's famous warm winds can swing temperatures from -20°C to +10°C overnight. If a chinook is forecast, you might luck into a warm moving day even in January
  • Start early: Winter days are short. An 8 AM start gives you maximum daylight for loading and unloading
  • Have the heat on: Make sure the furnace is running at your new home before the movers arrive. A cold house makes unpacking miserable and can cause issues with temperature-sensitive items
  • Keep the door closed: When movers are loading/unloading, designate one entry point and keep other doors closed to maintain indoor heat
