Apartment Moving Tips: Elevators, Building Rules & More

· 3 min read

Apartment moves in Calgary — especially in the Beltline, Mission, and downtown core — come with unique challenges that house moves don't. Building rules, elevator logistics, parking restrictions, and deposit protection all require planning. Here's how to navigate them.

Building Rules: Know Them Early

Most Calgary apartment and condo buildings have specific moving policies. Contact your building manager or condo board as soon as you know your moving date and ask about:

  • Moving hours: Many buildings restrict moves to weekdays, typically 8 AM - 5 PM. Some allow Saturday mornings but rarely Sundays
  • Elevator booking: Book the freight elevator (or regular elevator with pads) as early as possible — especially in the Beltline where demand is high
  • Loading dock access: If your building has a loading dock, ask about truck size restrictions and how to reserve a time slot
  • Common area protection: Some buildings require movers to pad the elevator and protect hallway floors. Professional movers do this as standard practice
  • Deposit or insurance requirements: Some condo buildings require a moving deposit ($200-$500) or proof of your mover's insurance before allowing the move

Elevator Moving Strategy

An elevator is your greatest asset in an apartment move — or your biggest bottleneck if not managed well.

  • Book the elevator for the full moving window — not just an hour. A one-bedroom takes 2-3 hours, a two-bedroom takes 3-5 hours
  • Load the elevator efficiently: Your movers will maximize each trip, but be ready for the elevator to be in constant use
  • If there's no freight elevator, the movers will pad the passenger elevator. This works fine but may add 30-60 minutes to the move
  • Walk-up buildings: Stair carries are slower but doable. Expect to add 30 minutes per flight of stairs to your total move time

Protecting Your Damage Deposit

Many Calgary renters lose part of their deposit due to moving damage. Protect yourself:

  • Photograph everything before the movers arrive — walls, floors, door frames, and common areas
  • Professional movers use protective materials — floor runners, door jamb pads, and furniture blankets — as standard practice
  • Point out existing damage to your movers so they can work around it
  • Do a walkthrough with your landlord after the move to document the unit's condition

Parking Your Moving Truck

Downtown and Beltline parking is the biggest apartment-moving challenge. Options include:

  • Building loading dock: Best option when available
  • Street parking: Check signage for time limits and meter requirements. Some streets have no-stopping zones during rush hour
  • Temporary no-parking permit: The City of Calgary issues temporary permits for moving. Apply at calgary.ca at least 5 business days ahead
  • Back lane access: Some buildings allow back-lane loading — ask your building manager
