10 Proven Tips to Save Money on Your Calgary Move

· 3 min read

Moving costs add up quickly, but there are smart strategies to keep your bill as low as possible without cutting corners on quality. Here are 10 proven tips from years of helping Calgarians move.

1. Move Mid-Week, Mid-Month

The busiest (and most expensive) moving times are weekends, month-end, and summer. A Tuesday or Wednesday move on the 15th of October will almost always be cheaper and easier to book than a Saturday move on August 31st.

2. Declutter Before You Pack

Every item you don't move saves time and space. Movers charge by the hour for local moves and by weight/volume for long-distance. Selling, donating, or recycling items you no longer need is the single best way to reduce costs. Calgary has excellent donation options including the Calgary Drop-In Centre, Goodwill, and the Women's Emergency Shelter.

3. Pack Yourself

Professional packing services typically cost $200-$800 depending on home size. If you have the time and ability, self-packing can save a significant chunk. Start 2-3 weeks before your move with rooms you use least.

4. Get Free Boxes

Before buying boxes, check Facebook Marketplace, local buy-nothing groups, and Kijiji for free moving boxes. Liquor stores are another great source — their boxes are sturdy and have built-in dividers perfect for glasses.

5. Disassemble Furniture in Advance

If your movers are charging by the hour, every minute counts. Disassemble beds, desks, shelving units, and tables before the crew arrives. Keep all screws and bolts in labelled zip-lock bags taped to the furniture.

6. Be Completely Ready When Movers Arrive

Everything should be packed, pathways should be clear, and you should know exactly what's going and what's staying. Movers standing around while you decide what to do with the hall closet costs money.

7. Load the Truck Strategically

If you're doing a partial DIY move, load heavy items first and close to the truck's cab (over the axles), then fill lighter items on top and toward the back. This prevents shifting during transit and makes the best use of space.

8. Compare Quotes (But Not Just on Price)

Get quotes from 2-3 licensed movers and compare what's included. The cheapest quote isn't always the best value — hidden fees, inadequate insurance, or inexperienced crews can cost more in the long run.

9. Ask About Off-Peak Discounts

Many moving companies offer lower rates during off-peak periods. At Unitas Movers, we keep our rates consistent, but we may have more flexible scheduling during slower months that can work to your advantage.

10. Take Tax Deductions If Eligible

If you're moving for work (at least 40 km closer to your new workplace), you may be able to deduct moving expenses on your Canadian tax return. Keep all receipts — moving company invoice, packing supplies, travel costs, and temporary housing. Consult a tax professional for specifics.
